Luther Vandross Biography

Luther Vandross was born on April
20, 1951 in Edison, New Jersey. He had two older sisters and one
older brother. [His sister Patricia was a singer with The Crests]
[Note: His got his middle name, Ronzoni, because his mother needed
to think of a name quickly as she was filling out the birth
certificate and a box of Ronzoni was sitting on the table.]

He grew up on the lower East Side
of New York City, then moved to the Bronx in 1964.

Attended Western Michigan
University for two years, but left to follow his heart and pursue a
music career.

Musician David Bowie helped to
establish Vandros on the music scene. He even opened up for Bowie on
tour.

For few years he wrote songs and
became involved in commercial song jingles. He also did backup
for other artists (e.g.,, Chaka Khan, Richard Marx,
Bette Midler, Carly Simon and
Barbara Streisand)

He released his first album in 1981
entitled Never Too Much. His first album to break the top ten
on the charts was Any Love in 1988.

Suffered a stroke in April of 2003
& never fully recovered

Passed away on June 30, 2005
