Daniel Powter Biography
-
Daniel Powter was born on February 25, 1971 in
British Columbia, Canada (in the Okanagan Valley).
-
He was influences at an early age by music due
to his mother, who herself was a musician (pianist). She would introduce
him to all types of music from classical to pop. He also began to take
music lessons at an early age, starting with instruments such as the violin,
but eventually finding the piano (after bullies beat him up). His mother
would take him to all types of concerts – even if it meant pulling him out
of school to do so.
-
As a young child he was in a terrible accident
– he was hit by a car, which left a scar on his head. To cover the scar he
wears a beanie hat – which has become one of his trademarks. He travels
with at least 40 beanie hats when on tour.
-
He began to sing and play in High School
bands. After High School, he began to study music at Edmonton’s Grand
MacEwan Colege. However, after two years, he needed to find himself in his
music and moved to Vancouver
-
At first he lost himself in the music scene to
drugs and music, and was addicted to cocaine for almost eight years during
the 1990s (see article
Powter Lost Eight Years to Cocaine), However, he had been clean for the
last few years and is bent on trying to make sure no one else makes the same
mistakes he did.
-
Eventually, after he cleaned himself up, he
met producer Jeff Dawson. Over the next year, he began to write and the
songs which eventually became the tracks on his first album. [note: writing
could be hard at times for him, since he is dyslexic.] The songs were
produced by Dawson and the veteran producer Mitchell Froom.
-
Daniel released his first single, “Bad Day” in
early 2005. It first debuted in Europe and made it within the top five in
most European countries (peaking at #3) and topped the radio airplay charts
– then repeated the same in Australia, the U.S. and his native country of
Canada. A great part of its early success was due to the fact that
Coca-Cola used it as a theme song for its European ad campaign. The video
for “Bad Day” was also very popular, featuring the sexy Samaire Armstrong
(Anna on The O.C.).
-
He then maintained international desire for the
song, and his new album when he performed in Berlin for Live 8 in July 2005.
He then released his first, self titled album, Daniel Powter which
has continued to show the same great fanfare as his single. The second
single from the album, “Free Loop” will be released in November.
