Alicia Keys Biography

Born and raised in
Hells Kitchen in NYC to Terri Augello and Craig
Cook (her mother was white and her father was
black).

Began singing at
age 5, when she auditioned for the part of
Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz as a
Kindergartener. With the support of her parents,
she began learning classical piano at age 7. She
listened to a wide variety of music while
growing up from Beethoven to JayZ. This helped
influence her unique sound later in life.

Began writing at
age 14 (first song was “Butterflyz”)

She attended the
Professional Performing Arts High School and
graduated as valedictorian of her class. She
was accepted to Columbia University, however, a
different Columbia, Columbia Records offered her
a record deal which would force her to leave
college.

She left Columbia
Records in 1998 and signed on with Arista
Records. She recorded her first single “Fallin,”
which got a huge boost in sales after she
appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Due to the success
of her singles, her first album, Songs in the
Mirror, debuted at number one on the charts
in June 2001. She won five Grammy Awards for
this album. She also performed at the 2001
MTV Music Awards, and was nominated for the
Image Award for
Outstanding Performance in a Variety
Series/Special.

Hew second album,
released in 2003, Diary of Alicia Keys
has also been a huge success.

She has also started a business with Krucial
Brothers called Krucial Keys Enterprise to
develop and produce music talent.

In
2004 she published a book entitled Tears for
Water: Songbook of Poems and Lyrics.

She
sang at the pregame show for Superbowl XXXIX in
February 2005. She performed in July 2005 at
Live8 and also recieved the
Songwriters Hall of Fame Starlight Award in
2005, which honors gifted songwriters who are in
the early years of their careers.

What's in Alicia Key's future? She will
appear as the first guest on a revival of MTV's
unplugged in September 2005. Then in
October, she is releasing another album with
some old songs from Diary and four new
songs. She is also planning on writing a
second book in the near future. She will appear
on the big screen in 2006 as an actress in a
movie entitled
Film Composition of Black and White which
will be produced by
Halle Berry.
